Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20, Miami Dolphins 7
The Greg Schiano era got off to a good start tonight when the Pewter Pirates harpooned the Dolphins out on the open sea. Don’t worry though, they will promptly be sent to the tuna cannery so as not to go to complete waste. Taking their practice session down south to Miami, the Buccaneers won 20 – 7.
The Bucs scored touchdowns on their first two drives. The first was scored on a 4th and goal leap by LeGarrette Blount to cap off a solid drive by the Bucs starters. Josh Freeman was 4 for 5 passing (41 yards) on his only drive including a reception by Mike Williams that took the ball to the Miami 6. Only the next drive (which went 92 yards), rookie RB Doug Martin scored a touchdown from two yards out. On that drive, reciever Tiquan Underwood had two impressive catches including a 44-yarder in heavy traffic that took the ball to the Dolphin 4. Backup QB Dan Orlovsky was 8 for 8 passing for 91 yards on the night. The Buccaneers defense was overall pretty good early on except for a glaring FOUR offside penalties. A very bright spot was rookie linebacker Lavonte David who splashed all over the place, including an interception on a pass tipped by newly acquired defensive tackle Amobi Okoye.
Preston Parker played the role of goat with a 15-yard personal foul penalty on the opening drive and a muffed punt return later in the first half.
The Dolphins finally got on the board with a touchdown pass to Charles Clay from rookie Ryan Tannehill. Tannehill looked solid against Buccaneer backups. He got a lot of help with surprising play from wide receiver Julius Pruitt.
