Concert Review: Imperial Conquest, Promethean Horde, Sorcerer At The Brass Mug In Tampa, 8/3/12.
The stars lined up last night and for the first time in over a year I was able to make it out to a local metal show. You know you are in Tampa when you arrive at the bar an hour and a half early and the jukebox plays Adele, followed by Death, then the Rolling Stones, then Deicide, then Pink Floyd, then Overkill… etc. Extreme metal is of course part of the city’s DNA, even though the vast majority of the citizens are completely unaware of it. So, what does $8 buy me in entertainment? Well…
The first band was worth all the money and then some. Sorcerer, mixes all the speed and creative vision of 80′s German thrash metal with the awesomeness and atmosphere of… well… 80′s German thrash metal. I’d already decided that when I saw vocalist Josh Cannon take the stage in a Destruction shirt that the band had better have the chops to backup the thrash I was expecting, otherwise I was gonna be hugely disappointed. Well, the band did not disappoint in the least. High energy stuff that would’ve had me moshing in my earlier years with the bite of honesty I’d hoped for. This is a band I am gonna keep my eye on. Later I found out that James Rochford (Parasite X guitarist and Megavod master of the universe) had recorded their demo at his studio, so hopefully I will be scoping that out forthwith…
The next band was a black metal band called Nefarious Ascendancy. It’d be brutally dishonest for me to give any opinion of their set because I spent that time catching up with some old friends I had run into. They play pretty straightforward black metal. Check ‘em out if that’s your thing…
The third band was Promethean Horde. They’ve developed quite a local following the last couple years but this was the first time I’d seen them. Melodic black metal with some headbanging riffs and a backup vocalist whose clean vocals are very reminiscent of Dan Swano were my lasting impressions. Immortal with keyboards for atmosphere, perhaps. They were very tight live and never got bland…
The closers were Imperial Conquest. This was the second time I’d seen them, but I think they made a better impression this time around. Blackened death metal with pure honesty and passion. Also very tight and energetic. The set was short and came seemingly to an abrupt end out of nowhere. Best to leave ‘em wanting more than to overstay your welcome though, I reckon. Check out all of these bands on Facebook and do your part to preserve your local metal scene wherever you are.
